The foot of the majestic Sossusvlei Dunes hosts Kulala Desert Lodge, the closest lodge to Sossusvlei. Which can be accessed via a private gate exclusive to Wilderness Safaris.

Ideal for introducing your family to the natural wonders of Namibia. Take in the spectacular scenery on nature drives and walks, as well as electric “fat bikes” to freely explore the open plains. Top off an extraordinary desert experience with a soaring hot air balloon flight over the dune field.

Nature drives

The 37 000-hectare private Kulala Nature Reserve offers exclusive wildlife-viewing opportunities including gemsbok (oryx), bat-eared fox, brown hyaena and birds. Additionally enjoy a coffee or sundowner stop in scenic parts of the reserve.

The sundowner tour

Set out in the late afternoon for a nature drive and complete your excursion in a remote and dramatic spot on the reserve, sipping a gin and tonic while watching the sun set over the distant mountains or dunes.

Sleeping under the stars

Sleep out under starry, starry skies on the roof or your kulala, while lulled to sleep by the peaceful, nocturnal sounds of the Namib Desert.

Ancient Sesriem Canyon

This fascinating geographical formation is the result of water carving its way through the rocks over millions of years. At three kilometres long, walks through the gorge reveal distinct geographical layers, laid down over aeons.

Walking trails

Walking trails focus on becoming immersed in this remote area, as well as its scenic beauty. While the fascinating, and surprisingly, diverse array of insects, reptiles and rodents which make this dry and harsh region their home. The Tsauchab River Trail takes a stroll along the dry riverbed close by the camp.

Visit Sossusvlei and Deadvlei

World-famous Sossusvlei is both the name for the area in general as well as an enormous clay pan, flanked by immense sand dunes. Nearby, at the foot of some these dunes, the skeletons of trees dominate the landscape where once water flowed. This area is known as Deadvlei.

ACCOMMODATION

The camp comprises 23 thatched and canvas tents. While each built on a wooden platform, with a flat rooftop for sleep-outs under the stars. The main area includes a pool and a wraparound veranda overlooking a waterhole.

NOTE: The ballooning is at extra cost and is closed on 25 Dec and 1 Jan, and from mid-Jan to mid-Feb.
